Newsvine Photographers: Extending & Clarifying the Scope

The original intention behind Newsvine Photographers was to increase collaboration between photographers and writers.  In fact, the creation of the group was a result of a Newsvine Photo Pool on Flickr.com.  The pool, despite being an excellent idea, is not likely viable.  However, collaboration between Newsviners is very much possible and should be encouraged.

To accommodate this, the admins of Newsvine Photographers are expanding (a clarification really) the articles accepted by the group.   Articles may be from any author on Newsvine but the accompanying image(s) must be from a group member.  Articles from non-members should be clipped to the group; those authors should not join the group.

A great example is this article.

Photographers are encouraged to offer photography services to their peers.  A quick comment, or an email, will do the trick.  An example:

This is a great article, Minnie. I wish I could have gotten a photograph of the Dome for your article. Next time, if you're interested, let me know if you'd like/need a photograph of something and I'll try to get it before your deadline.

Also, there's nothing wrong with adding photographs to articles after they've been published.

Traditional photography isn't the only game in town.  Digital art can also enhance an article and will now be acceptable material.

The Newsvine Photographers Code of Honor/Charter will be updated to reflect these changes.

I would love to see collaboration between users! I've always thought this was a good idea. Good luck!

... such a good idea. Do they even know what we could accomplish by cooperating with each other? Anything.

An excellent expansion of the groups purpose. I've actually seen quite a few articles and thought, "I have the perfect picture to go with that." LOL

A strengthening of the roots, my dear. It's a great way to get your name out there; one might actually want to go searching for articles.

Well, I'm not so concerned with getting my name out there, but I like pictures with articles. Of course, mine is a biased opinion - LOL:)

I have no talent for writing but if someone needed a piucture that I've already posted or something here on Oahu I'd be happy to get it to them.

It would really facilitate doing new things in this group if NV would let us put images in the comments. I have seen this done on other sites (I know, Mal is a BAD dog...) and it does WONDERS for "collaboration."

I know it wouldn't take a lot for them to make that work. It works perfectly in the editor... Try putting in an <img> tag while in HTML mode, then switch back to easy mode... image is there... BUT they stripe out any HTML they don't like when the comment is posted, and for some reason they don't like images.

Hey rottlady... Have you got any "pull" with those guys??? You too Ben! They clearly like the Newsvine Photographers group, as do many Viners.

I think the real hindrance is not having the v2 group tools. I'm going to head over to that article and perform some CPR, methinks.

I seem to recall the notion of putting images in comments was discussed at some point.

I'll be honest... it's the last thing I'd want to deal with. Think about the comment spammers that we seem to have finally nearly eliminated. Can you imagine all of those comments filled with images of Ed Hardy shirts and Ugg Boots? Or worse, porn? Or the effects of graphic violence? I'm not sure we have the manpower to keep on top of the abuse.

I will ask, though.

I appreciate the difficulty of the issues you brought up Viki. Perhaps there is some sort of intermediate solution. Maybe... as a reward for "good behavior" the ability to add photos to comments could be given to "selected" Viners... Something like the way entry into the beta program is handed out.

Just a thought Mal...your idea of image-use collaboration is intriguing, but perhaps instead of a 'good behavior/reward' approach, which I think will inevitably lead to hurt feelings and charges of bias and favoritism...the use could be physically confined within selected 'private' groups. That way it's available for 'collaborators' with specific and relevant needs, but kept off the public groups and pages that the comment-spammers and whackadoodles like to hit.

Hi W,

That idea had occurred to me too... except the private piece which would certainly solve the spam and abuse issues. But one of the purposes of these photography groups is visibility... so the privacy piece kind of works against that... Furthermore, having to get approval for being "let in" to a private group or having been kicked out for "bad behavior" is also likely to lead to some hurt feelings. I am thinking of the "good behavior" reward as sort of another phase... Kind of like the Greenhouse... only getting more instead of less...

There are plenty of hurt feelings around this place and I doubt that some people getting a reward while others have to, as Schnoo once said to me, "earn yer dues" is not likely to make a dent in the amount of hurt feelings we see. Furthermore, it seems to me that have a few "rewards" for behaving nicely might be a very useful tool for encouraging better behavior around here.

..."rewards" for behaving nicely might be a very useful tool for encouraging better behavior around here.

I certainly wouldn't argue with that.

...one of the purposes of these photography groups is visibility... so the privacy piece kind of works against that...

Yes, I see your point. But I think you could still confine the use to members within selected groups; groups that are still visible to the community-at-large who may be non-members, [of that group], but who can still comment the ole' fashioned way. Either way it would demand greater vigilance on the part of group admins/owners/members, and maybe more members with access to the tools to remove inappropriate postings. 'Shoot on sight', [if you'll pardon the metaphor], rather than report and wait on the sheriff to arrive.

Great idea, Ben! I'm sorry I haven't been more active of late, but I've been kind of busy with the VineMeet-- I've learned a lot lately!

You're doing a marvelous job! As always, I might add!

Ben- I like the idea of collaboration. There are a lot of good writers that could use some editorial photographs. (:
